my life and art
Berlin
I was born in Berlin and I grew up in five different German states. When I returned to Berlin, I started studying landscape architecture. I could just as easily have gone into the plastic arts, as I had spent a large portion of my youth drawing and painting. The smell of oil-paint alone...
Wageningen
Shortly after my studies, I moved to the Netherlands and, after a few years, became a Dutch citizen. I ran a consultancy agency in Wageningen, taught students and performed research. I thoroughly enjoyed coaching students and helping them with their design exercises. The experience of seeing young talents develop into skilled designers over the years was truly exhilirating.
playing with art
I spent my spare time playing on my computer. The results were sometimes indistinguishable from (photographs of) “real” drawings or paintings. Everything and anything was possible. My eyes were opened.
This was rather fortunate, because, once I stopped working for the university, I was able to focus fulltime on my hobby. What began as playful experimentation became passion. The work was diverse and it invoked associations with a wide variety of artists. I felt free to express myself and what developed was a rich and colourful collection.
reflection
However, I felt as if something was missing; something that belonged to me and me alone, uniqueness. I decided to take a look in the mirror.
the basic idea
In 2004, I discarded my attitude of wide orientation, and radically so. I tossed virtually everything overboard. I did keep my signature style of course. On a tableau linked to a computer, I made quick and fluid scribbles in large quantities and I saved the best ones. To create a project, I chose a number of the scribbles, combined them and manipulated them a bit. Pure on white backgrounds. I made a copy and changed the shape somewhat. I then made a copy of the copy and changed it using the same formula, and so forth. I made each subsequent copy a little lighter than the previous one. This created space, a three-dimensional object that seems to appear out of the fog or the space. Two or three-dimensional, it all depends on your perspective. You could say it is something that appears, stays for a while and then disappears again. A snapshot maybe or a series of snapshots. But never an interpretation or representation of something. Evolving from some scribbles, or, if you wish, from nothing. No more. You make up the rest.
a productive idea
I was now able to express myself artistically in an entirely new and unique way. Contemporary without jumping on the bandwagon of whatever is the current craze. In hindsight, the years prior to 2004 were learning years. Since then, I have been designing works like the ones on this website. I occasionally adjusted my methods and implemented some accent shifts, but I stayed true to the basic idea and I have stayed true to this basic idea to this day.
